The race for London mayor so far

In London Elections 2008 on 9 April, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Check out the Newsnight debate between the three candidates for London mayor here.

Maybe it is my political bias but I thought Ken came out particularly well. He knew his figures and came across as straight-talking. On the other hand Boris got pulled up by Paxman on the cost of the new Routemasters he is promoting and looked a bit stupid.

The campaign is starting to pay off with the latest polls putting Ken ahead

The survey conducted by Ipsos Mori shows the race remains incredibly tight with Livingstone on 51% – two points ahead of Johnson on 49% once crucial second preference votes are taken into account.

Let’s face it, the YouGov polls being done with the Evening Standard, which are giving Boris huge leads, are bollocks.

All things standing I don’t imagine many votes were won and lost last night, the viewers of Newsnight probably made up their minds quite a while ago. But for the average voter their thinking will be different. The average voter will know who Boris is and find him amusing. However, when they are in the polling stations the choice will be obvious. London isn’t a circus, don’t give it to a clown!
