BULS endorses campaign for votes at 16

A terrific campaign is under way from within the Young Labour movement.  It comes after the NPF voted to include in the Party’s coming manifesto a proposal to grant votes for 16 and 17 year olds.

I have long thought this to be a good idea so I’m really pleased to see my party is taking a forward and pioneering step in the right direction.

    Heya,

it’s interesting as an idea, a fantastic youth-empowering campaign that is right up BULS’ street, but having said that, as a club we hardly represent the entire electorate – how many 16-17 year olds can make an informed decision?

Also, an acceptance of this proposal is probably great news for smaller parties (the plucky outsiders). Not just the LibDems, but any party that crops up with a celebrity leader.

Would this really prove that the UK leads the way in liberal modernisation? Would the next target be emancipation for 12 year olds?

Hope all of you are ok, i’m in Syria, and Facebook is blocked!!!!!!!

I’d definately be behind such a campaign. As a 17 year old in 2007, it particularly annoyed me that i was one of the few pupils in my year group unable to vote in my local elections in 2007,despite ironically being one of the few actually interedted in politics.

Ed is right on one point – most 16/17 year olds know fuck-all about politics, other than the prejudices they’ve inherited from parents/tabloids. But if i may be irreverant for a moment – how does this differentiate them from the rest of the electorate??

(when have the Lib Dems ever had a ‘celebrity leader’?)
